Introduction:
13 girls from Beckfoot and Salts Grammar School attended the ‘Professional Careers for Women in Construction' taster day on 10 th December 2004 , organised by Lets Twist and CITB. The aim of the event was to introduce year 10 schoolgirls to take part and find out more about the opportunities and professional and technical careers available in construction for women and the range of different routes they could follow to get into this industry. This was achieved by engaging the girls in a number of different activities including discussions, practical activities relating to construction, meeting female role models and visiting a local construction company (New Mason Properties – a £70 million property development company) who are very committed to employing and encouraging women to enter this field.
Activities:
The day focussed on professional careers within the industry, giving an insight into the roles of quantity surveyors, project managers and architects through educational games and also by receiving talks from role models such as two civil engineers, an architect and an environmental consultant. The girls were also given blank plans of Victoria Mills and an apartment space as part of a workshop challenge. They had to decide how the apartments within the mill should be set out and similarly how the rooms inside the apartment should be spaced out. The schoolgirls were also taken around a tour of the Mill, which is set alongside the River Aire at Saltaire, and shown a completed apartment to see what the professionals did with the blank plans.
