Event 2 – 10 March 2005
Bradford College
Introduction:
22 schoolgirls in total from 6 schools in the Bradford West and South confederations attended the Brighter Futures Taster Day. During the event, the schoolgirls were informed of the opportunities available for young people aged 14-16 years old through the Brighter Futures Project. The taster days were specifically designed to raise the schoolgirls awareness of construction and engineering opportunities for girls at Bradford College . This was achieved by engaging the girls in a number of activities/demonstrations relating to construction and engineering i.e. Plumbing, Motor Vehicle and Fabrication and Welding.
Activities:
Fabrication/Welding demonstration.
A demonstration on fabrication and welding processes was carried out, which included talks on metal melting, adding filter wires, oxy setting welding processes as well as discussing what gasses are involved and what equipment would be used for fabrication and welding processes.
Motor Vehicle demonstration.
A demonstration on how to change a car wheel was carried out as well as how to check tyre pressure in wheels as well as talks on opportunities for women in the motor industry. Plumbing Activity.
This activity was about pipe connection - The schoolgirls were asked to identify what tools and equipment were needed for this task. They were also informed of how the tools/equipment should be used safely. The hands on practical activity involved bending together and connecting several pieces of copper pipes. The final task of this activity included testing the copper pipes to see if they were free of leaks. |
